A QR code generator built around one idea: get out of your way

Most people looking for a free QR code generator have a very small job to do. They need a square on a poster that opens a menu. They need guests to join the WiFi without reading a twenty-character password out loud. They need the phone number on a van to be one tap instead of one squint. That job should take thirty seconds, and it should not require an email address, a credit card on file or a plan that quietly disables the code you already printed.

Name QR does exactly that job and nothing else. The generator sits on this page, runs inside your browser, and produces standard static QR codes that never phone home. The content you type — a password, a client's mobile number, a private link — is encoded locally and never reaches our servers. When you download, you get the finished file immediately, in the format you asked for, with no branding stamped across it.

Everything is designed mobile-first, because that is where most of this work actually happens: standing behind a counter, sitting in a van, or five minutes before a print deadline. The layout, the tap targets and the download buttons all work on a phone screen just as well as on a desktop.

Seven QR code types, one generator

Each type encodes a different standard format, and each one changes what the phone does the moment the camera recognises the square.

URL QR codes

The workhorse of the format. A URL QR code sends anyone who scans it straight to a web address — a product page, a booking form, a Google review link, a menu, a playlist, an app store listing. Because there is no redirect service in the middle, the link opens as fast as the phone can load it, and it keeps working for as long as the page exists. Paste the address with or without https:// and we will tidy it up for you.

Text QR codes

Sometimes you do not want to send anyone anywhere. A plain text QR code displays a short message on screen the moment it is scanned: a serial number, a set of assembly instructions, a table reference, a parcel ID, a safety warning in a workshop. Nothing loads, nothing is tracked and it works with no internet connection at all.

vCard QR codes for business cards

A vCard QR code packages your full contact card into a single square. Scanning it opens the phone's contact screen with your name, mobile number, email, company, job title, website and address already filled in, so nobody has to retype anything or lose your card in a drawer. Put it on the back of a printed business card, in your email signature, on a conference badge or on the window of a shop.

WiFi QR codes for guests

A WiFi QR code is the fastest way to stop reading long passwords out loud. Enter the network name and password once, print the code and stick it on the wall of your cafe, salon, clinic waiting room, holiday rental or spare bedroom. Guests point their camera at it and join — no typing, no spelling out capital letters, no reprinting a laminated card every time somebody mistypes.

Email QR codes

An email QR code opens a new message with the recipient, subject line and body text already written. It removes the friction between 'I should get in touch' and an actual enquiry landing in your inbox, which makes it a strong fit for flyers, trade-show stands, packaging inserts and support labels on equipment.

Phone QR codes

A phone QR code loads your number into the dialler in one scan. It is a small change that pays off on vehicle livery, estate agent boards, delivery notes, emergency contact signage and anywhere a customer is standing outdoors with one hand free.

SMS QR codes

An SMS QR code opens the messaging app with your number and a pre-written message. Campaigns that ask people to text a keyword to opt in, request a callback or vote suddenly need zero instructions — the customer scans, then presses send.

How it works — three steps

  1. 01

    Pick your type

Choose URL, text, vCard, WiFi, email, phone or SMS. The form changes to ask only for the fields that type actually needs — no empty boxes to guess at.

  2. 02

Fill it in and watch it build

The preview redraws on every keystroke, so you can see the code become denser as you add content. Set the colours and the quiet-zone margin while you are there.

  3. 03

    Download and test

Take the PNG for screens or the SVG for print. Then scan your own code with a phone before it goes anywhere near a printer — always.

Why people keep coming back

  • No signup, ever. You are not the product. There is no account to make, no onboarding email and no upsell before you get your file.
  • Codes that do not expire. Static codes keep working forever, including the ones you printed last year.
  • Private by default. Encoding happens in your browser. WiFi passwords and client contact details stay on your device.
  • Print-ready output. A 1024 px PNG for anything on a screen, and a true vector SVG for designers, sign makers and large-format printers.
  • Genuinely mobile. Built to be used one-handed on a phone, not squeezed down from a desktop tool.
  • Free for commercial use. Put the codes on products, packaging, adverts and signage without a licence fee.

Where a QR code earns its place

Hospitality. Table-top codes for the menu, a WiFi code by the door, a review link on the receipt.

Retail and packaging. Care instructions, refill subscriptions, provenance stories and warranty registration printed straight onto the box.

Trades and field services. A phone code on the van, a vCard on the quote, an SMS code on a job sheet.

Events and conferences. vCard badges, schedule links, feedback forms and a WiFi code on every table tent.

Property and automotive. Listing pages on for-sale boards, spec sheets on forecourt windscreens.

Clinics, schools and offices. Guest WiFi, intake forms, room booking pages, equipment manuals on an asset label.

Frequently asked questions

Is this QR code generator really free?+

Yes. Every QR code you make on Name QR is free, unlimited and yours to use commercially. There is no signup, no trial period, no watermark and no cap on how many codes you create or download.

Do the QR codes expire?+

No. The codes we produce are static, which means the destination is encoded directly into the pattern of black and white squares. Nothing is stored on our servers, so there is nothing that can be switched off, throttled or expired later.

Do I need to create an account?+

Never. The generator runs entirely in your browser. Type your content, watch the preview update and download the file — you will not be asked for an email address at any point.

How do I make a WiFi QR code?+

Choose the WiFi tab, enter your network name exactly as it appears in the WiFi list, add the password and pick the security type (WPA/WPA2/WPA3 for almost every modern router). Print the code and guests can join by pointing their camera at it.

What is a vCard QR code used for?+

A vCard QR code carries a full contact record — name, phone, email, company, job title, website and address. Scanning it opens the phone's 'add contact' screen with everything pre-filled, which makes it perfect for business cards, email signatures and conference badges.

Should I download PNG or SVG?+

Use PNG for screens, slide decks, social posts and quick prints; ours exports at 1024 pixels so it stays crisp. Use SVG for anything a designer or printer will handle, because vector files scale to any size — from a sticker to a billboard — without blurring.

Can I change the colour of my QR code?+

Yes, and you should keep contrast high. Dark pattern on a light background scans best. Avoid light-on-dark inversions and low-contrast pastel pairs, because many camera apps will simply refuse to read them.

Why won't my QR code scan?+

The three usual culprits are low contrast, a missing quiet zone and printing too small. Keep at least two modules of empty margin around the code, print it no smaller than 2 x 2 cm for close-range scanning, and always test with more than one phone before you go to print.

Is my data private?+

Your content is turned into a QR code inside your own browser using an open-source library. We do not transmit, log or store the text, passwords or contact details you type into the generator.

Can I edit a QR code after printing it?+

Not with a static code — the destination is baked into the pattern. If you need to change a destination later, point the QR code at a URL you control (for example a page on your own site) so you can update where that page redirects. Editable dynamic codes with scan analytics are on our roadmap.
